 Ceramics Classes

 * These classes come with FREE three-hour Open Labs -- one for each week of class (eight-week classes receive eight and four-week classes receive four). Open Labs are only given for classes (not for workshops). Please consult your instructor for dates and times.
Online registration closes three days prior to event start time. Afterward those interested may call ClaySpace at 630 393 2529 to inquire about availability. No refunds are given after the start of a given class session. There are no classes the week of May 29th through June 4th (Memorial Day) or July 3rd through July 8th (Fourth of July). Eight week class end times are adjusted accordingly.

Ceramics - Beginning/Intermediate Ceramics *

Learn and explore the basics - from technique to design - with an eye towards raising your skills to the next level. whether it is learning centering and throwing simple forms on the wheel or learning combined forms and advanced glazing techniques, this class is for you.

Ceramics - Throwing on the Wheel *

You will be challenged to not only develop a personal style, but also an awareness of the entire process of creating functional pottery. Included will be demonstrations of the creation of simple forms (mugs, small bowls, and plates) along with more complex forms (covered bakers, large platters, and bowls) as well as slip trailing, sgraffito, and glaze formulation.

Ceramics - Anything Can Happen *

This intermediate independent study focuses on students improving skills in areas of their choice. In addition to advising on how best to improve focus areas, Jean will demonstrate some of her personal favorites. This session is best suited to those already proficient in the basics (centering, pulling, trimming, etc) of wheel thrown ceramics. Questions before registering can be directed to

Ceramics - Hand Built and Sculptural *

Designed to expand your knowledge of the sculptural ceramic world, you will explore various techniques and artists to inspire you to create your own pieces of art. After learning the basics of hand building functional ware, the student may transition to sculptural hand building.

Get Muddy
Want to experience clay without a big commitment then this four week class is for you. You will work on a different project each week during the first three weeks that will involve the use of the slab roller while learning various hand building techniques. In the fourth week, you will glaze your work. Projects will be available for pick up two weeks after class ends. No open labs are offered with this class.

Adventures in Mixed Media Ceramics*

Mixed media is a broad, all-encompassing topic. During this class you will learn the basics that will help you get started. You will explore a variety of alternative finishes; (different kinds of paint and pastes), play with adding objects (wire, beads, found) and use different glues and epoxies. Create a ceramic mask and tiles that you can use for reference. Even the inexperienced will develop a new appreciation for the art form and learn skills that will make creating unique works of art easy. This is not for items used for food.

  Back to Basics Throwing*

In this beginning to intermediate class you will learn the steps to throwing on the potter's wheel. We will prep the clay, center, raise the walls, and shape the pot. After basic skills are honed, move on to more complex forms, design, and glazing techniques.

Try It Ceramics

Never tried clay before? Create something wonderful! Hand build using simple techniques. Some examples of a project are: mugs, small dishes with texture, trays with handles, or soup bowls.Your work will be ready for pickup in two weeks.
